"The Drowned Forest of Alert Bay" Alert Bay on
Comorant Island is
mostly noted for the many totem poles and the tallest totem pole
erected by the local native
population. The U'mista Cultural Center in the town houses some
major pieces of the "first people"
and the town is governed by the native council. This particular
forest in
on one of highest points on the island and is the remains of an
industrial
canning operation that ruined the land. It has been turned into a
city park and is
noted for its bird watching. It has a boardwalk through the
marshy landscape and few picnic spots.
