Kancheepuram, India

"The 1500 year old Mango Tree " ©2001 photo Elroy Christenson

The Shiva temple of Sri Ekambarantha Temple in Kancheepuram, India contains a mango tree that supposedly is 1500 years old. This attests the fact that this is a very old religious site. One discovery that I made was that on this same location had been a Buddhist temple. Since Buddhism was driven out of India about 600 ce, it is very conceivable that the tree was probably planted by the monk of the temple rather than the Hindus. Nevertheless, this is a very old and interesting Shiva temple. It is certainly one of the largest of the area and is used daily for Hindu religious services.
