Sandlewood Grinder

"Jain Sandlewood Grinder in Udaipur, India", © Elroy Christenson 1985.

The elaborately carved Jain temple in Udaipur was rather empty except for a few keepers of the temple and few tourists. No priest seemed to have been present.  This old gentleman was one of the few actually engaged in an activity.  He was grinding a block of sandlewood on a yoni stone. The yoni is a female personification of Shiva in most of Hinduism so it was somewhat surprising to discover this here.  Sandelwood is typically used as an incense so I assume that he will be making this into a paste for later burning.  .
