Mother Temple

"Pura Besakih (Mother Temple) Bali", ©1994 photo Elroy Christenson

The "Pura Besakih" temple is on the side of Mt Agung volcano.  Although Indonesia is dominately a Moslem country Hindu worshipers come here from all over Indonesia.  Many will make the pilgrimage by walking the some 23 kilometers to make an offering on a very auspecious day of the year.  The approach to the main temple is bordered by private family temples.  Hinduism here is a combination of ancestral worship and traditional Hinduism.  Offerings are made with food and money.
