Lods, France

"Lods and the Loue River", © Elroy Christenson 2004

Lods is a village in the Franche-Comté region of northeastern France on the Loue River. It has few other needs of notoriety but its beautiful location in this steep sided valley that leads from the Source-de-la-Loue down to Ornans.

The area around Ornans was a favorite subject for the locally raised artist, Gustave Courbet. He was a founder of the Realist style of art which in turn helped to influence the development of Impressionism. He painted landscapes up and down the valley before and after he became famous. He is often quoted, "show me an angel and I will paint one."
